Plastic-free project: another important step towards zero emissions
Italgraniti Group is adopting numerous solutions to reduce non-recyclable packaging. Italgraniti Group has worked on these issues, obtaining results even above expectations. An example of this is the 1,500 m3 less polystyrene (interlayer between the porcelain stoneware slabs), which since 2023 has been replaced with sheets of triple corrugated cardboard, containing over 60% recycled material.
Furthermore, a new packaging system has been implemented, which uses roll films made of 50% recycled plastic and which has allowed the consumption of plastic materials to be reduced by 50%. Finally, polystyrene and expanded polyurethane, which were used inside the packaging, have been replaced by recycled materials such as porcelain stoneware packaging and 100% recycled embossed paper.
The Group's plant purifies and reuses 100% of waste water. In addition to saving water resources, Italgraniti has eliminated the risk of pollution of surface and underground waters.
Italgraniti Group recovers 100% of discarded, raw and cooked materials within the production process. By maximizing the recovery of waste, the need for new raw materials is reduced and natural resources such as clays and feldspars are saved.
The investments have almost eliminated undifferentiated industrial waste, to date it is only 1% of the total. The containment of waste has contributed to a virtuous production cycle capable of recycling most of the waste that is created during the production phase.
Regenerative afterburner
The innovative system that protects the well-being of the territory
The new post-combustor has strengthened the existing fabric filter fume purification system, avoiding the possibility of unpleasant odors being dispersed. The modern system is able to intercept the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) present in the organic-based glues used in digital decoration.
VOCs could cause olfactory discomfort in those who live and work near the production plant. Although there have never been any reports in this energetic sense, the plant allows the combined production of electricity and thermal energy, enormously increasing the efficiency of the starting fuel and cutting - compared to the separate production of electricity and heat - energy costs and CO2 emissions. The system is able to supply electricity 24/7, guaranteeing from this point of view the self-sufficiency of the entire plant, with the feeding into the grid of what exceeds the requirement. ITALGRANITI GROUP has decided to install the afterburner as a preventative measure. Inside, temperatures reach 850 °C, sufficient to completely oxidize VOCs and aldehydes. Equipped with three combustion chambers with high thermal efficiency, the postburner collects the fumes to be treated in the first and the purified ones in the second, while it reserves the third chamber for the elimination of any residues from the post-combustion process itself.
